It seems like every season brings a new basement issue to light. Two winters ago, there were 2 cracks in the basement walls, now there are 6. You’re getting a little more water in the basement every time it rains now, because the neighbor’s have recently added downspout extensions to their gutters.
Believe it or not, there are some very simple things you can do help reduce seepage and moisture in your basement and avoid basement waterproofing in Milwaukee or the surrounding suburbs.
1. Regrade the Soil Outside
No, we’re not talking about tearing up your entire yard. Go to your local home improvement store and pick up a few dozen bags of topsoil. Spread the fresh topsoil around the entire perimeter of your foundation, making sure to grade about 4 feet away from your home, at a downward angle. This will act as a ramp for surface water, ensuring that it does not pool along the foundation walls.
2. Caulk Any Openings.
Three very common entry points for water in your foundation are windows, doors, and along the top of your foundation wall (sill plate). Over time, the seams that surround windows and doors and degrade and separate, allowing water to stream in. In addition water can pour in through your sill plate and down your walls as the ground becomes saturated with water. Grab a few tubes of masonry caulk and be sure that these entry points are well sealed.
3. Check Your Pumps Regularly
More than likely, your home is already equipped with some sort of sump pump. Whether or not it’s fully resolving any water issues you may be having, it’s probably helping to some capacity. To be certain that it’s working to its full potential, be sure to check it regularly. We recommend checking it at least once a month. You can do this by pouring a 5 gallon bucket of water directly into the sump basin. If the water completely submerges the pump, and it does not pump the water out, it’s time to call your local professional to get it replaced.
By following these three simple tips, you may just be able to relax the next time it rains. If you need more information about basement waterproofing in Milwaukee or surrounding suburbs, give us a call at (262) 232-7148!
